GR21 Normandy cliffs trail, Falaises de Bénouville

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Chemin des douaniers was an important lookout patrol route along the entire coast for military defense and control of smugglers. It's often steep and unmaintained, though this section along the top of the cliffs with awesome views up to Étretat is flat and well traveled.

From the sailor's chapel dedicated to Notre-dame-de-la-Garde, you have a view of Etretat. Further on, beyond the long pebble beach, De Maupassant saw the "elephant dipping its trunk into the sea": he was referring to the Porte d'Aval, an amazingly carved rock arch.

Nungesser and Coli Monument

Highlight • Monument

Behind the chapel, a huge spire reaches skyward. There, a few steps lead to the base of the old monument in the shape of an airplane. Here you can see the nose, the wings, the tail and the name in large white letters. This memorial to Nungesser and Coli commemorates the departure of the Oiseau blanc, the first and so unsuccessful attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean without a stopover (May 8, 1927). The aircraft was last spotted at this location.

Highlight • Natural Monument

View of the chalk cliffs and rock arch with the limestone pinnacle behind them. The title "Belvedere" is well deserved.

This viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the sea and the cliffs, as well as the Roc Vaudieu and the Aiguille de Belval, two rocks with unique shapes that emerge from the water.

Bénouville

Highlight • Settlement

The church is dedicated to Notre-Dame: its choir from the end of the 12th century has pointed vaults and its nave probably dates from the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century.
The choir was decorated with frescoes by the religious painter Louis Chifflet around 1895: there are two paintings in arcades, each representing a scene from "the childhood of Christ". In the nave a funerary plaque dated 1768 mentions Antoine Gillain, Marquis de Bénouville. The coat of arms of the Gillain family are inserted in an oval Sable and composed of a chevron Or, a silver crescent to the dexter, a gold star to the sinister and an armed and langued lion gules in point, the whole surmounted by a crown of marquis.
Two wooden statues hold the attention:
Saint Eutrope (XVI-XVIIth century); bishop healer of dropsy1
Our Lady of the Harbor
We also note the existence of a remarkable Eucharistic reserve in polychrome stone. It consists of two superimposed cylindrical floors crowned with a dove.
