Grand Hotel Cabourg

Highlight • Restaurant

This hotel was built in 1861, but renovated in 1907 to its current state. The same year, Marcel Proust stayed there. When he was ten years old (in 1881), he already stayed in Cabourg because of his asthma. Since then, the fashionable writer stayed every year at the Grand Hôtel until 1914. He was inspired by these experiences to write a portrait of beach life at the beginning of the 20th century and of the customs in Cabourg - "Balbec" - during the belle époque.

Cabourg Casino Gardens

Highlight • Monument

Until the middle of the 19th century, Cabourg was a small fishing village. In the 1850s, Henri Durand-Morimbau, a financier from Paris, developed the plan to build a "modern" seaside resort next to the "old" town. He founded a company that bought up the beaches. On behalf of the company, Paul Leroux, a young architect from Caen, designed the plan for the town of Cabourg-les-Bains. The first casino was built in 1854, and the first grand hotel followed in 1861. The town has retained its semicircular layout in the centre to this day; the streets, which radiate outwards from the Jardins du Casino, are lined with buildings from the Second Empire and the Belle Époque.

Saint Joseph Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1870, Armand Leclerc, a merchant in Rouen, aimed to build not a holiday home but a large hotel, facing the sea. Inaugurated in 1879, four years later he added a private roadside chapel. Its architecture, combining brick and limestone, brings it closer to the Saint-Aubin church in Houlgate, inaugurated in 1878.
The chapel was restored in 1945 and found new stained glass windows in 1948. They are made by Georges-Pierre SAGOT. Master Glass Painter in Bayeux, born in Roubaix on June 12, 1898 and died in Bayeux on May 11, 1975. The “flamboyant” stained glass windows of the nave and choir are remarkable. Their red, orange and purple hues are particularly original. They take up the theme of the “Beatitudes”.

Port Guillaume Marina

Highlight • Structure

A place steeped in history: from Dives, the Norman king Guillaume le Conquérant transferred his fleet to England in 1066.
Since the end of the 19th century Dives bears the suffix "sur mer" and has become a popular destination on the Côte Fleurie, although it has a harbor in the mouth of the Dives, but still, in contrast, contrary to the neighboring seaside resorts Cabourg (in the west) and Houlgate (in the east) is not really located by the sea.
