Coniston Water

Highlight • Viewpoint

Coniston is the 5th largest of the Lake District lakes at just over 5miles long.
John Ruskin lived on the banks and declared the view of the Old Man of Coniston from across the lake as the finest in England. Arthur Ransome based Swallows and Amazons here and maybe one of the three islands is Wild Cat Island?

A5084 Along Coniston Water

Highlight • Viewpoint

The A5084 is great for a fast ride with great scenery, or at least this section is. After Coniston it gets steeper and hard work. Pass Thrang Crag Woods here which provides some shelter.

Coniston Village

Highlight • Settlement

Coniston is located at the northern end of the third largest lake in the Lake District: Coniston Water. Steam yacht cruises are offered on this lake.
Coniston is said to be derived from the Old Norse words Konigs Tun or king's settlement. That king is said to have been Thorstein, a Viking who gave his name to Thurstinii Watra, the old name of Coniston Water.

Newby Bridge is a hamlet situated on the banks of River Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Historically part of Lancashire, it takes its name from the five-arched stone bridge built across the river in 1651. Within the hamlet, you find accommodation and food and drink. There is a stop on Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway here, too.
