Biga (sculpture) at Schloss Gottorf

Highlight • Monument

The depiction of a two-wheeled chariot drawn by two horses is a classic motif from antiquity, similar to, for example, the quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate. The sculptor Hans Wimmer takes up the theme, but creates a reduced sculpture that not only omits details such as reins, but also appears entirely unwarlike. Instead of a warrior in full armor, a young woman in a summer dress stands on the chariot in the Gottorf Castle Sculpture Park, and the crowned horses also appear more like prancing.

Data on the work
Hans Wimmer: Biga (1988–91, bronze, height 200 cm)
Gottorf Castle Sculpture Park, Schlossinsel, 24837 Schleswig

Castle Chapel Schloss Gottorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The castle chapel was built around 1590. Between 1610 and 1614 the "Ducal Prayer Room" was built between the galleries in the north of the chapel. It too was restored, including the inlaid coffered ceiling. The work on the palace chapel alone cost around 450,000 euros. The funds come from a project decided in 1999, which is intended to highlight the importance of the Baroque as an outstanding epoch of Gottorf's heyday and will run until autumn 2008. A total of 1.5 million euros can be spent on this, 50 percent of which are EU funds. The State Office for the Preservation of Monuments assumed the cost of the prayer room of 20,000 euros.

On the lowest terrace of the Baroque garden is the beautiful Hercules Pond... from it rises the beautifully designed sculpture of Hercules, who swings a club

Schlossallee Gottorf

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

The magnificent palace avenue connects the palace and the museum island with the Neuwerk and baroque gardens.
Anyone who has always wanted to stroll along a real avenue of castles while playing Monopoly can fulfill their dream here.
At the end of the avenue in the Neuwerkgarten there is a water cascade with a classicist temple on the hill, which replaced a grotto there in 1800.
