Waldemar's Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

Under the rule of the Danish king Valdemar I, the Danevirke was massively expanded in the early Middle Ages. For over four kilometers, the original earth rampart was additionally reinforced to the south with a brick wall over two meters wide. Part of the wall has been exposed at this spot.

Schanze 14 (Dannewerk fortification)

Highlight • Historical Site

In the German-Danish War of 1864, when it came to the national affiliation of the Duchy of Schleswig, the Danes built the medieval ramparts of the Danewerk as a defensive position. Schanze 14 was one of the bastions that were built for the Danish cannons. They were built from earth walls that were strengthened with grass roots. The aim was to prevent wall splinters and ricochets from causing even more damage. The bastion could only be held in front of the Austrian troops for a few days.

On the wall from the Thyraburg towards Dannewerk you come through a picturesque forest. Shortly before the end, the terrain becomes somewhat marshy in the direction of the run, which makes it look very unspoilt, especially in the light of the morning sun.

Thyraburg

Highlight • Historical Site

The Thyraburg was probably a wooden Wallburg from the early Middle Ages and thus a part of Danewerks. For the construction of the castle an artificial plateau of 45 meters in length and 35 meters in width was created, which is still preserved today. From the castle, however, there are no remains.

Cannons at Pionierwerk Museum

Highlight • Monument

Since the museum is currently being rebuilt on the other side of the street, I doubt that the cannons will also be relocated - as of May 2025, they are no longer here.

Danevirke-Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The Danevirke Museum is entirely dedicated to Northern Europe's largest archaeological earth monument, the Danewerk. In the museum, you will learn all about the history of the Danewerk from its beginnings in the Migration Period to the time of the German-Danish Wars. The Danewerk was a massive border fortification consisting of ramparts, walls, and ditches – many traces of the rampart system are still recognizable in the landscape today. Since 2018, the Danewerk, along with the important Viking trading center of Haithabu, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Note: The Danevirke Museum is currently being completely rebuilt with a new exhibition and new outdoor facilities. The opening is planned for spring 2027. Construction work is also taking place in the Archaeological Park Dannewerk until the end of September 2026 to offer visitors an even better experience.
