The River Thames at Cookham

Highlight • River

The second-longest river in the UK, the Thames flows through southern England and the capital before reaching the North Sea. Here, the mighty river winds through the historic village of Cookham. Boats moored on the water's edge bob peacefully and ducks glide amongst the reeds. The Cookham Bridge and Ferry Inn makes for a good lunch stop.

Cookham Bridge and The Ferry Inn

Highlight • Bridge

The Thames at Cookham Bridge is an attractive spot. It is lined with trees, and there are boats dotted about along the riverside. The bridge works on a traffic light system, but there is a pavement area to stop for photos if you feel the urge to do so. There is a good pub at the bridge too called the Ferry Inn.

The Tarry Stone

Highlight • Monument

A large irregular-shaped sarsen stone. Formerly marked the boundary of the grounds of the Abbot of Cirencester, and is said to have been connected with sports events in Cookham before AD 1507. Originally stood 50 yards north-north-east and was placed in its present position by the Parish Council in 1909.

Cookham is a lovely Thameside village, with a train station that links to Paddington. Apart from having many great riverside and hilly walks, Cookham has numerous excellent pubs and restaurants. Popular ones are Bel & The Dragon, White Oak, Maliks (Indian), Chef Peking, Spice Merchant, Crown on the Moor, Ferry - to name a few.

Boulter's Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames near Maidenhead. The lock was built in 1912 and features some very picturesque surroundings of canalboats, an old bridge, and some lush greenery.

Burnham Beeches

Burnham Beeches is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve, and Special Area of Conservation thanks to its ancient beech woodland and rich wildlife. More than sixty species of plants and animals that call the 927-acre (375 ha) site home are rare or under threat.

The historic woodland is also home to relics of times gone by.
Located in the southwest of the woodland, you can visit Seven Ways Plain hill fort which dates to the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age.

Neighbouring film studios have used the Beeches as a shooting location in various productions such as Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Goldfinger, and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
