Downhill Trail in Peak District National Park

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you follow this trail north with the wall on your left it undulates for a fair distance. Once through the gate, turn left (though there is also a bridleway straight ahead) and keep heading towards Hayfield. This then turns into a faster rutty descent. Take a right turn towards the steep wooded valley be prepared to stop and take in the view here it's a bit special and then it gets a bit spicier.

Foxholes Clough Descent

Highlight • Climb

After turning right off the moorland trail you turn sharp right and head down a steep and rutted (also when I visited... Very slippy sloppy and lethal in the wet). Take your time plenty of options for lines. Then a little woodland section follows down to a building. All great stuff.

Coldwell Clough Descent

Highlight • Trail

Wow, hold onto your Foakleys coz this gets rowdy. My kind of descent fast not too narrow and not too rocky but with a couple of technical parts to keep you thinking.....Goldilocks.

Laneside Road Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Well worth doing the M4 Roman lakes route for this, a nice Lille reward after all that climbing.🐍

Monks Descent to Lantern Pike

Technical bit of the Bridleway leading towards Lantern Pike, so much fun.

Lantern Pike

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

If you come up Lantern Pike from Matley Moor, once you go through the gate at the bottom, and make your way up a short steep Rocky climb you can either follow the BW round, or make you way up to the top of Lantern Pike and go across, it brings you out further down the trail.
If you stick to the path it usually holds up well in most conditions, just watch for a few drainage gaps on your way down the descent. It’s quite a steep decent, with a few loose rocks to mindful of. Try to feather your brakes as they will be burning otherwise. As you hit the tarmac descent be careful at the bottom as it is a road. This then follows across to a fun little descent which drops you off near the cafe for a well deserved brew.
If your going the other way, it’s a bit of slog depending on conditions, the bottom section near the cafe is the trickiest bit, after that you should be ok.
As always watch for walkers coming up/down and be nice and say hi!

Sett Valley Cafe

Highlight • Cafe

Sett Valley Cafe is a brilliant little place to get delicious food, reviving coffee and a bit of rest on a bike ride. They use seasonal, fresh produce and cater for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free diets as well.

Super bike friendly, they also have a bike pump, rack and repair kit.
