Highlight • Viewpoint

Spanning the spectacular Avon Gorge, Clifton Suspension Bridge is one of Bristol's most iconic landmarks. The bridge has been a toll bridge since it opened in 1864, connecting Clifton to Leigh Woods. The bridge was designed by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw, based on earlier drawings by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The bridge costs £1 for vehicles. Cyclists can ride across fo free.

Leigh Woods

Highlight • Viewpoint

Leigh Woods is a tranquil nature reserve situated next to the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. With a delightful mix of broadleaf woodland, open grassy glades, and much flora and fauna, the reserve’s waymarked trails lead you to breathtaking viewpoints over Bristol, the suspension bridge crossing the Avon Gorge, and beyond. The woodland is in the care of the National Trust.

Keener Skills Loop

Highlight • MTB Park

Follow the orange signs to the right along the blue-rated Yer Tiz MTB trail to find the skills loop. Here, each obstacle set gets progressively harder, with series of drop-offs, rock rolls, off-camber turns, rock gardens, tabletops and doubles, as well as a technical climb to finish. Will you choose rock slabs or roots?

As they build up in difficulty each time, you can gain confidence on the smaller challenges before trying the harder ones, and there's usually an alternative line if you don't want to ride them. The loop rejoins Yer Tiz at the end, or you can go for another round!

Leigh Woods Picnic Bench Trails

Highlight • MTB Park

It doesn't get steeper than this! Nice techy, steep turns for the enduro riders. These trails are unofficial and have returned after managed forestry work.

Leigh Woods Tabletops

Highlight • Forest

Leigh Woods is a beautiful woodland area and a popular destination for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers alike, offering stunning views of the Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The woods are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and badgers. There are also a number of interesting historical features to be found, such as the remains of a Roman villa and a 17th-century ironworks.

It is a great place to visit for a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike. There are a number of different trails to choose from, ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate. The woods are also a great place to take a picnic or have a barbecue, with plenty of spots to choose from.

You can join the blue-rated MTB trail in Leigh Woods from here, just next to the car park. This loop is named Yer Tiz and you'll also find some more challenging red-rated alternative sections along the way too. It's pretty rocky for the most part but not too muddy, although you will find plenty of puddles in the winter so waterproof socks are a good idea if you have them!

The trail crosses walking routes and fire roads often, so be aware of families and dogs also enjoying the beautiful Leigh Woods nature reserve.
