Reeth Village Green

Highlight • Settlement

Thought of as the capital of Swaledale, Reeth is a village with a history as rich as its scenery. Incredibly, in its mining heyday, it was producing a tenth of England's lead. Today, its industrial past is evident on the high moorlands, while Swaledale is a tranquil hikers' haven, quieter than the more accessible dales further south. There are plenty of places to eat and stay, including the Black Bull, which dates back to 1680.

The start of Arkengarthdale. The road takes you out of Reeth & the wildness of the valley is immediately apparent.

Rout options are the long drag to Tan Hill (avoid when there is a westerly, it can take forever!) or left at the CB Inn up Bouldershaw or right shortly after to climb The Stang.

Gunnerside Stone Bridge

Built in the early 1830s as a way of providing employment for the people affected by the depression in the lead mining industry. The bridge was washed away in and rebuilt.

It carries the B6270 over the river Swale.

Oxnop Scar Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of the lesser known climbs in the Yorkshire Dales, Oxnop Scar is a breathtaking stretch of singletrack road from the Swale Valley (Swaledale) up between the peaks of The Fleak to the east and Whitfield Fell to the west.

The steepest part comes first, with gradients measuring up to 25% on the first right hand hairpin bend! It's amazing how quickly you rise up the bank, offering incredible views back down over Swaledale as you glide along the smooth black asphalt up the more gentle moorland summit.

The total climb is 2.4 miles (3.8 km) long and peaks at 1,607 feet (490 m).

Oxnop to Crow Trees Descent

Highlight • Cycleway

Crossing from Wensleydale, this stunning road drops in a series of swoops and turns. The final 300 m is precipitous and gravel strewn through three tight turns. Caution very much advised, as are hydraulic brakes! Enjoy the spectacular views but concentrate on the road at this point.
