Mam Tor — Broken Road

Highlight • Structure

This road was constructed in 1819 to provide an easier route than Winnats Pass. It crosses the Mam Tor landslips below the main summit, and this has caused problems throughout the roads' history. After a series of road works and subsequent landslips, the road was finally closed and abandoned in 1979. The A625 once again tackles the steep Winnats Pass and the remains of the old attempts buckle and slide slowly downhill.

Walking along this road reminds you just how fickle human construction is in comparison to the strength of Mother Nature.

Mam Tor is often called 'the Shivering Mountain' as its loose shale often causes landslides. After a series of intense landslides in 1912, 1933, 1946, 1952 and 1966; in 1979 a particularly bad slip caused the troubled Mam Tor road to close permanently.

Odin Mine

Highlight • Cave

Odin Min is one of the oldest lead mines in England. Records confirm that it existed as far back as 1260. However, production peaked between 1720 and 1800. During this time 100 workers — men, women and children — excavated up to 800 tonnes of lead ore per year. The mine closed in 1847.
