The site overlooks the North Sea, and has a direction marker, known as the Euroscope, marking locations in other countries and their distance from Ness Point, so you can start planning your next voyage.

Fish-Net Drying Racks, The Denes

Highlight • Structure

This open section of ground beside the Birds Eye factory is called The Denes. Location of fish-net drying racks on Lowestoft waterfront known as 'The Denes'.
Historically the area was the location of a fishing community called the 'Beach Village' from which the local fishermen used longshore boats (along the shore) and, later, sailing smacks and then steam drifters. The only remnants of the old fishing village are the drying racks that run along Whapload Road. These are possibly the oldest remaining structures in Lowestoft. The original Beach Village dates back to the 1760's.
