All Saints Church, Middle Woodford

Highlight • Religious Site

All Saints is a 12th-century church on the outskirts of Middle Woodford, close to the River Avon. Whilst the church retains some original stonework, much of what you see today dates to the 15th century and there was substantial restoration in 1845. Inside, you find an octagonal font from the 15th century and pews from the 19th century. All Saints is Grade II-listed.

The River Avon is spectacularly pretty, particularly in Salisbury and upstream. Woodford Bridge is a gorgeous place to view it, complete with weeping willows pouring their fronds over the surface and swans drifting in the sunshine.

The riverside here has a well-placed pub and a few benches for you to while away the hours in utter serenity.

The Bridge Inn

Highlight • Pub

Upper Woodford is a pretty village in the charming Woodford Valley. The Sarsen Way long-distance trail passes through the village, while the Monarch's Way skirts it to the south. Walkers are welcome in the local pub, the Bridge Inn, which serves traditional pub grub, has outdoor seating in its riverside garden and has a wood-burner for those chillier afternoons and evenings.

Normanton Down Barrows

Highlight • Viewpoint

On the crest of this downland ridge is a Neolithic long barrow and around 40 Bronze Age round barrows, ancient burial grounds dating back to between 2600 and 1600 BC. Visible from Stonehenge around half a mile (0.6 km) to the north, Normanton Down Barrows have long been the subject of archaeological digs. Today they're a scheduled monument and part of the Avebury and Stonehenge World Heritage Site, so digs are strictly controlled.
