View of Upgang Beach from Whitby Promenade

Highlight • Beach

The western end of the Promenade overlooks Upgang Beach towards Sandsend. One of the best British beaches for sure and during sunrise or sunset, the views and experiences are to die for.

Whitby Beach

Highlight • Beach

Whitby Beach is the British seaside at its best. With clear water and clean golden sands, it has a peaceful, yet playful atmosphere and is the perfect place to relax on a summer’s day. As you stroll along the shoreline, with the sound of the waves crashing, it’s a happy place to be. With bracing water, the sea will certainly refresh you in warm weather. However, all year round, there are plenty of keen swimmers, especially on New Year's Day, when taking a dip has become a tradition.

Whalebone Arch, Whitby

Highlight • Historical Site

Whaling is a significant part of Whitby's history - as the information board tells you here, between 1753 and 1833 there were 55 Whitby-based whaling ships. This arch celebrates this history. The original arch was erected in 1853; this one was donated by Alaska in 2003. Whitby Abbey is visible on the cliff from here.

Whitby Piers and Lighthouses

Highlight • Structure

The two piers in Whitby have been in existence since before the 1500's. By 1540, the two oak piers (east and west) were replaced partially, with stonework (in the reign of King Charles 1), with further work around the 1600's. Both piers were rebuilt in 1735, each measuring approximately 183m, but by 1814 the west pier was further extended to reach a length of 309m. In 1905, both the piers had new pier ends built on, each of a length of 152m.
