Possibly one of the best vantage points to enjoy the Shropshire market town of Ludlow, Whitcliffe Common is a wonderful place to explore. Best enjoyed on foot thanks to the network of footpaths, from the River Teme up the steep wooded banks there's plenty to see. Keep an eye out for dippers and otters near the water, as well as many woodland species nestling amid the undergrowth.

Dinham Weir

The Weir is a very pretty place to take a rest and to enjoy the scenery. East of the weir is Ludlow Castle, although history records that the whole town (and the castle) was called Dinham long before it was called Ludlow; Dinham means 'settlement by the fort'. Ludlow, if you're curious, means 'a place on the hill by the loud waters'.

Ludlow Castle

One of the earliest stone castles in England, this remarkable Norman castle stands over the River Teme in the historic town of Ludlow. Almost 1,000 years old, the ruins are in excellent condition and feature sections built across the centuries.

The castle is privately-owned and open to visitors. It's also let out as a wedding venue and has a cafe and a shop. There is an entry-fee.
