Salisbury Cathedral and Historic City Centre

Highlight • Historical Site

Salisbury is a fascinating city in the vibrant county of Wiltshire. This cathedral city has much going for it, from its historic centre to its multitude of prehistoric remnants. It sits on the confluence of the Rivers Nadder, Avon and Bourne and is well known for its lovely parks and weeping willows draping over the water's surface.

The city is small with a population of a little over 40,000 but it's a vibrant destination with visitors from all over the world. The remains of a Norman cathedral, Old Sarum, lie just to the north of the city whilst Stonehenge can be found 8 miles (13 km) to the northwest.

Perhaps most notable for its cathedral, inside, you can find one of the four original copies of the Magna Carta on display. The cathedral has the largest cloisters and close in the country. It also has a pair of nesting peregrine falcons and a webcam above the nest which is broadcast live online during nesting season.

John Halle's Hall and Odeon Cinema

Highlight • Historical Site

This building was once the residence of John Halle, the mayor of Salisbury and a local wool merchant. It's a beautiful building typical to Tudor times. The best part is its medieval hall and, although the building is now a cinema, you can still have a quick peek inside the hall for free.

Salisbury Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Salisbury Cathedral can be seen for miles around and is the elaborate heart of this small and beautiful city. Renowned for its English Gothic architecture, the cathedral dates back to the 1200s and has the tallest church spire in the UK. Not only that, the cloisters and close are the largest in Britain.

Think that’s enough? Not for Salisbury. The cathedral is home to the most well-preserved of four copies of the Magna Carta and has a verge and foliot clock, one of the oldest working clocks in the world. The subject of several John Constable paintings, it’s a beautiful sight and surrounded by stunning historic buildings.
