Description
The Dalles Bridge View loop from Chenowith is one of those gravel biking routes that truly earns its 'difficult' rating: a challenging 87.9-mile (141.4 km) journey with a staggering 6876 feet (2096 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 8 hours and 51 minutes to complete. This route is for experienced gravel riders seeking a serious workout and incredible views across the Columbia River Gorge.
What to expect on The Dalles Bridge View loop from Chenowith
Expect a diverse mix of surfaces, from extensive gravel trails converted from old logging roads to paved sections. You'll encounter "chunky lines, hairpin corners, and runoff-ruts" at higher elevations, smoothing out as you descend towards Chenoweth. This mix demands tires at least 42c wide. The scenery is a constant reward, with panoramic views of the Columbia Gorge, the river, and the surrounding plateau. You'll pass through high desert, rolling hills, and forests of oak and ponderosa pine, spotting dramatic basalt formations and cherry orchards. Crossing The Dalles Bridge is an easy highlight, and on clear days, you might even see Mount Hood and Mount Adams. Be prepared for "punchy, chunky and steeper" climbs; this is a hard gravel ride requiring very good fitness and advanced riding skills.
Planning your visit
The Dalles area is known for its dry weather, making it a great destination for gravel biking. The fall season is particularly recommended for the vibrant colors along Chenoweth Road. While specific parking details aren't provided, plan your visit to account for the route's significant duration. Always carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months, as this is a long and demanding ride.
