Description
If you're looking for an accessible and rewarding outdoor escape in the East Bay, the Lafayette Reservoir loop from Lafayette is definitely worth your time. This easy hiking route covers 3.7 miles (5.9 km) with a gentle 360 feet (110 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 1 hour and 38 minutes to complete. It's a fantastic choice for anyone seeking pleasant views and a good workout without extreme challenge, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a brisk run.
What to expect on Lafayette Reservoir loop from Lafayette
The route offers a dual experience, allowing you to choose your adventure. The paved Lakeside Nature Trail provides a flat, easy path right along the water's edge, surrounded by manicured lawns and picnic spots. For those wanting more of a challenge, the unpaved Rim Trail climbs higher, offering a "bucking bronco" topography with constant elevation changes through oak groves and grassy slopes. From the Rim Trail, you'll be treated to expansive panoramic views of the reservoir, the Lafayette-Moraga and Las Trampas hills, and even distant Mount Diablo. While the Rim Trail has some heart-pumping climbs, it's a favorite for local runners and offers a more vigorous experience than the lakeside path.
Planning your visit
The Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area is a popular spot, so plan for paid parking upon arrival. Dogs are welcome on the trails but must be kept on a leash. The Rim Trail can be quite exposed with limited shade, especially during warmer months, so spring is often the most comfortable time for hiking. Remember to bring enough water, particularly if you're tackling the more strenuous Rim Trail sections.
