Reichstädt Castle

Highlight • Castle

The manor and moated castle of Reichstädt was already mentioned in 1535, when it was owned by a Lord von Maltitz, who made significant technical innovations in the field of silver mining and thus became prosperous.

Over the next two centuries, the castle and manor changed hands several times. In 1569 the property was sold to the Saxon Elector Augustus, who used it as a hunting lodge. In 1632 the castle and manor were partially destroyed by the Holk warriors and rebuilt from 1639 under von Taube.

In 1717 it came into the possession of the von Schönberg family through marriage. During the 7-year war, the castle suffered major damage again. The Postmaster General Adam Rudolph von Schönberg expanded it into a baroque complex with a park in 1765-1776. The most prominent guest of the palace was the Russian Tsar Alexander I, who moved into quarters in the palace on a campaign in 1813.

The evangelical village church of Reichstädt is a Gothic hall church with baroque elements. It has an imposing west tower with neo-Gothic portals and one-storey galleries. Inside there is a two-storey columned altar from 1726 and a simple baptismal font from the 19th century. The church was extensively renovated in 2010. The surrounding churchyard is surrounded by an enclosure wall and houses a war memorial for the fallen of the First World War.
