Description
The Hiking loop from Johnson Shut-Ins is a fantastic way to experience Missouri's unique geology, offering a 2.9-mile (4.7 km) hike rated easy by Komoot, with 236 feet (72 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in 1 hour and 16 minutes. This route is perfect if you're looking for a relatively short but visually rewarding journey through ancient landscapes and river formations.
What to expect on Hiking loop from Johnson Shut-Ins
Expect a varied and often rugged journey on this loop. While the first 0.3 miles are paved and accessible, the trail quickly becomes more challenging, featuring natural tread, short rocky climbs, and numerous stairs. You'll navigate sections that can be slippery after rain, and some narrow parts hug cliff edges. The scenery is a constant highlight, with tranquil riverside views of the East Fork Black River carving its way through rhyolite formations. You'll pass through oak-hickory forests, small glade clearings, and catch glimpses of hidden waterfalls and the surrounding St. Francois Mountains. The unique "shut-ins" themselves, where the river cascades over ancient volcanic rock, are the central attraction. Despite its "easy" Komoot rating, the ruggedness and uphill sections mean it feels more moderate to somewhat strenuous, making it less suitable for very young children.
Planning your visit
The trailhead is easily accessible at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park. Be aware that pets are not allowed on the Shut-Ins Trail, so plan accordingly if you're traveling with a dog. The varied terrain, including rocky and potentially slippery sections, means sturdy footwear is a must. Consider wearing long pants as some parts of the trail can cut through overgrown brush.
