The Eighty Years' War raged over Flanders and the Southern Netherlands (1568 – 1648).
The iconoclasm, which took place in 1566, has left its mark on many places of worship, chapels, monasteries and abbeys. The Beggars, initially nobles, were fierce opponents of the Spanish King Philip II and have wreaked havoc in the Low Countries.
The Spanish king wants to put an end to the protracted uprisings and sends Don Pedro Coloma to Flanders to support Hertog Alva, Spanish general and governor of Flanders. When Don Pedro Coloma arrives in 1577, he settles in the lordship of Bornem. The religious war is raging in full force. He is assigned the Klein Brabant sector to chase the Beggars across the Scheldt.
