De Boeg (The Bow) War Memorial

De Boeg is a war memorial in Rotterdam. It commemorates the 3,500 crew members of Dutch merchant ships who lost their lives in World War II. Fred Carasso's monument was unveiled by Princess Margriet on the corner of Boompjes and Leuvehaven on April 10, 1957. The 46 meter high aluminum construction symbolizes a bow in the concrete waves. Willems Bridge

In 1927 the bridge was jacked up several meters and stripped of its ornaments. Marines from the nearby Marine Barracks on Oostplein defended this bridge and the adjacent railway bridge and quay 'Boompjes' since the German invasion on May 10, 1940. The resistance of the Dutch marines was much stronger than the Germans had expected. The Marines managed to hold back the advance of the German troops until the Germans decided to bomb the center of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940.
