St. Johannis Church Schweinfurt

Highlight • Religious Site

In addition to the Schweinfurt town hall, the St. Johannis Church, located above the north side of the market square, is certainly one of the most important buildings in the city, but in particular the oldest building in Schweinfurt.
Already in the last quarter of the 12th century the construction of a Romanesque choir as well as that of the north tower began. In 1987, during archaeological excavations, the remains of a presumed previous building were found in this choir. The possible conclusion can therefore be drawn that the age of today's evangelical main church in Schweinfurt goes back even further.
The transept was completed between 1225 and 1240. The south tower started at that time was never further built to the originally intended height.

Friedrich Rückert Monument

Highlight • Monument

On the market place rises the monument of one of the most famous sons of the city - Friedrich Rückert.
The poet and orientalist, whose birthplace is on the southeast corner of the market square, has been surveying the hustle and bustle on the lively square since 1890. The monument was created by the architect Friedrich Ritter von Thiersch and the sculptor Wilhelm von Rühmann. At the foot of the bronze rump, there are allegorical figures from his works, "Harnessed Sonnets" and "Brahmin Wisdom".

Schweinfurt Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

As in the Middle Ages, the market square is still a central and lively place for urban trade. Vegetable and fruit farmers from the surrounding area still come to the Schweinfurt market on market days to offer their goods.

The run-of-river power plant was built as a result of the barrage expansion of the Main from Schweinfurt to Bamberg. This section was opened to traffic in 1962 as a large shipping route (federal waterway). The power plant went into operation a year later and has two Kaplan turbines with a total output of 3.8 MW.

The building, which was built in 1904 as a tax office, is wonderful to look at and is now home to both the regional court and the district court of Schweinfurt.

Holy Spirit Church, Schweinfurt

Highlight • Religious Site

The Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit was built in the middle of the 15th century and almost completely destroyed in 1554 (second city ruin). It was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 16th century and in the Neo-Romanesque style from 1897 to 1902. The main portal with the figure of King David and the representation of the first Pentecost, the two side portals (Prophet Zacharias and the baptism of Christ as well as the Annunciation scene) and the tower with a tall statue of Mary are worth seeing. There are four altars inside the church.
