Villa Doudou

Highlight • Monument

History about the stately villas on the sea wall:
For the wealthy bourgeoisie, the sea wall at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was, as it were, a kind of boulevard from the city along which they could stroll. Not only the sea dike, but also the buildings along the dike are a transposition of this urban living culture.

The villas form a continuous building and are located on narrow plots. Furthermore, the facades always face the sea so that the view of the beach and water can be optimally enjoyed. All these characteristics can still be found at villa Doudou.

This cottage-style villa from 1901 was designed by Albert and Alexis Dumont and was originally called 'Titikot'. It is a narrow, deep house of three floors under a mansard roof. The sea view clearly prevails here because the front door is located on the ground floor (= half a floor above street level) and opens directly onto the living room, so that the living space is equal to the width of the building plot. The use of beveled windows also contributes to this. The house has a separate service entrance that opens directly into the basement and is intended for staff. The villa is protected as a monument, but today it is squeezed between two high apartment buildings, a typical image of the current buildings on our coast.
