St. Lars Church, Linköping

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Lars Church is located in the middle of Linköping, at the crossing between Storgatan and St. Larsgatan.

St. Lars' Church is a classic 19th-century church with a rather characteristic tower. In the tower there is a beautiful carillon that plays five times a day for the town's residents. Inside the church, the first thing that strikes you is the absence of a traditional altarpiece. Instead, there is a marble "choir screen" that encloses most of the choir. The former altarpieces, painted by Pehr Hörberg, are now placed on opposite sides of the large organ.

The church's baptismal font is located at the former north gate of the church; the gate was replaced by a glass work of art by Staffan Löwstedt.

Linköping Cathedral (Cathedral Church)

Highlight • Religious Site

Anyone who has ever been to downtown Linköping will immediately remember the magnificent cathedral. Because this determines the city center with its venerable cathedral. Visitors feel the old time in the cathedral. For as early as the middle of the 12th century, the place was known as a bishopric. The cathedral was one of the first monuments created to replace older walls. The completion of the cathedral took almost 300 years. It was completed in the 15th century. Therefore, tourists will find two different architectural styles in the huge structure, Gothic and Romantic.
Near the cathedral is the castle, also from the 12th century. The festive building is now used as a seat of government in the province. The medieval character of the town has been preserved to this day. Because the old walls were spared before the war bombers. However, they have been restored over time and renewed in many places. An example of an innovation is the high tower, which towers over the cathedral.

Linköping Castle

Highlight • Castle

Linköping Castle is Sweden's oldest surviving secular building with parts from the 12th century, built into the western part of the castle. The castle is located high and west of the city center, near the cathedral. It has a strictly classicist façade in creamy white and a green copper roof. The area around Linköping was the seat of the Sverkerska family in the early Middle Ages and the center of monastic and church construction in Sweden. The castle was originally built as a diocese. The castle was since 1785 the residence of the governor of the county Östergötland.

In 1995, the Swedish Real Estate Agency started renovating the façade and found that the oldest parts were not from the 13th century, as was previously thought, but from the 11th century Bishop Gisle's farm, which is the oldest surviving secular building Buildings of Sweden makes. Traces of older buildings, windows and prints in the west facade are marked as a map of the castle's history. The interior of the castle is most heavily influenced by the renovation of the governor's residence in 1796. However, there are still remains of the Renaissance castle, such as a fireplace in the National Hall and a few ornate roofs.
