The buildings, which today serve as market halls and have become a characteristic part of the Riga cityscape, were originally built in Kurzeme (Kurland), where they were used as zeppelin hangars by the German army in Vaiņode. Concrete cellars were built underneath the halls, forming a two-hectare underground city with a total of 337-meter-long corridors. Riga Central Market survived the reintroduction of capitalism and is now flourishing again.
