Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal

Highlight • Religious Site

Notre-Dame Basilica (French: Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal) is a basilica in the historic district of Old Montreal, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The church is located at 110 Notre-Dame Street West, at the corner of Saint Sulpice Street. It is located next to the Saint-Sulpice Seminary and faces the Place d'Armes square.

The church's Gothic Revival architecture is among the most dramatic in the world; its interior is grand and colourful, its ceiling is coloured deep blue and decorated with golden stars, and the rest of the sanctuary is a polychrome of blues, azures, reds, purples, silver, and gold. It is filled with hundreds of intricate wooden carvings and several religious statues. Unusual for a church, the stained glass windows along the walls of the sanctuary do not depict biblical scenes, but rather scenes from the religious history of Montreal. It also has a Casavant Frères pipe organ, dated 1891, which comprises four keyboards, 92 stops using electropneumatic action and an adjustable combination system, 7000 individual pipes and a pedal board.[1][2]

Maisonneuve Monument

Highlight • Monument

The monument, designed by Louis-Philippe Hébert, stands on the Place d'Armes. At the top is the statue of Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, the founder and first governor of Montreal. At each corner of the column, four groups of statues represent key figures in the city's founding. Among them is Jeanne Mance, the first nurse in North America and founder of Montreal's first hospital. In 2012, she was officially recognized as a co-founder of Montreal alongside Maisonneuve.

Bank of Montreal Building

Highlight • Monument

The Bank of Montreal building is one of Canada's most remarkable buildings. Its neoclassical façade, almost unchanged since its construction in 1847, contrasts with a majestic interior inspired by the Italian Renaissance and designed in 1901 by the renowned architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. The building served as the bank's headquarters until 1960, when the adjacent 17-story office tower was completed.

Queen Victoria Monument

Highlight • Monument

The second oldest monument in Montreal. The depiction of Queen Victoria, which was modern at the time, is striking because of her fragility and grace, because until then rulers were portrayed as god-like beings with supernatural powers.
