Hospital Church of St. Jakob

Highlight • Religious Site

The foundation of the church goes back to Emperor Charles IV, the associated hospital already existed in 1303. The church was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. Pulpit and altar are from 1680, the galleries are from 1617.

In 1990 the church was renovated on the initiative of the city of Zittau and handed over to the Evangelical Methodist Church (EmK) Zittau. On Sundays about 60 people attend the service in the hospital church. Some larger churches can not refer to such a resonance.

The monastery church of St. Peter and Paul dates from the 15th century, and was built in the Gothic style. After the Reformation, the church declined slowly and was rebuilt in the years 1652-1658.

Zittau's historic old town

Highlight • Historical Site

A beautiful city with poor bike lanes. Fortunately, most sidewalks are now only signposted as such, with the additional information "open to cyclists." A good solution for children.

Zittau Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

After Zittau had been almost completely destroyed in the Seven Years War by the Austrian army, the citizens began in the late 18th century with the reconstruction. Construction of the New Town Hall began in 1840. Just five years later, the impressive building, which was based on building plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was completed and opened.

September 26, 2021,26.09.2021 - Tag der offenen Tür im Gerhart Hauptmann Theater
Actually, the title is not entirely correct:
After we made our crosses at the polling station (hopefully in the right place), we wanted to do a little lap and then more or less by chance noticed that the theater was an open day and we took advantage of the opportunity. It was interesting to be able to take a look …

A day that was well utilized from morning till night and that too in dream weather. Started with another city tour through Zittau. First stop at the church Zum heiligen Kreuze with a visit to the over 600-year-old Lenten cloth - see history 🤔 sachsen-tourismus.de/poi/grosses-fastentuch-zittau.
Continued through the top-renovated city center with its richly decorated houses. Here, the wealth of …

Today was the day of the Zittau narrow-gauge railway. From Oybin we drove to Zittau Süd, to explore Zittau from there on a short city walk and then to continue to Jonsdorf. We liked Zittau, we found the Johanniskirche particularly beautiful - a Schinkel building.
