Church of the Holy Apostles, Kalamata

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of the Holy Apostles is Kalamata's most important Byzantine monument. The Greek War of Independence was declared here on the 23rd March 1821. Two main construction phases can be identified on the building. The initial Byzantine church of the 12th century presently houses the sanctuary. It follows the type of the free cross with elaborated ceramic decoration. During the Second Venetian period (1685-1715) a spacious domed hall was added to the west, currently the nave of the monument, along with the turreted bell-tower which was constructed above the northeast coner. Characteristic details of the addition are the hewn window and door frames, as well as the circular opening (oculus) of the western front.
The interior of the initial Byzantine church preserves Post- Byzantine paintings (late 16th - early 17th century). The Pantocrator adorns the dome. while the Ascension, the Second Coming and scenes from the Akathist Hymn decorate the barrel vaults.
During the 1986 earthquake the domed nave collapsed. Thereafter extensive restoration ond conservation works took place by the Ministry of Culture.
