St. Peter and Paul Aschheim

Highlight • Religious Site

The oldest traces of the parish church date back to around 600 AD. Today's church was built in 1936/37 incorporating the late Gothic choir of the previous church. The late Gothic choir, which has been used as a weekday chapel since 1987, is particularly worth seeing. Aschheim occupies a special position among the previously known church buildings of the early Middle Ages in Bavaria. Based on the Emmeramsvita, Aschheim is the first burial place of the missionary; at the same time St. Peter, the patron saint of the first local church, is mentioned - a rare case for that time. The patronal extension to St. Peter and Paul is first attested in 1524. In 1976/77 archaeologists excavated the six previous buildings of today's church, back to the traces of the first wooden church in the period around 600 AD. The municipality of Aschheim has made foundations and post holes of the previous churches visible.
