Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption (Calzada Cva)

Highlight • Religious Site

The parish is from the early seventeenth century. It preserves the original transept from its foundation, the rest is an extension from the year 1926.
During the work on the tower of the Parish Church in 1668, materials from it were used for the repair and construction of the hermitage.
During the visit in 1728, the rosary was ordered to be prayed in the hermitage of Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios as was customary. During the first half of the 18th century, there were many alms given in wills for repairs to the hermitage. In June 1740, the Archbishopric was declared in ruinous state, supported by the devout neighbors and their brotherhood, proceeding to the construction of the transept, dressing room and sacristy, finishing in the year 1764. In August 1748 Doña María de la Concepción Ruiz de la Cadena y Ramírez, sent to Ntra. Mrs. de los Remedios and Mrs. Santa Bárbara fifteen hundred reales of fleece for the work and factory that was trying to be done in her hermitage.
Once its reconstruction was completed, the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús de Nazareno, confirmed in a will of the year 1827, was transferred to said hermitage.

This hermitage is believed to have been founded at the beginning of the 17th century, as a sign of the great faith and devotion of its citizens towards the Holy Trinity, demonstrated through wills, memory foundations and chaplaincies, always including the same phrase "in the name of the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons, one true God".
Hermitage located on the road to Sta. Cruz de Mudela. It was run and assisted by the Trinitarian fathers, who in turn depended on the convent of the Holy Trinity in the town of Membrilla.
During the 19th century it was forgotten and left in a dilapidated state. Don Santiago Julio Maldonado y Maldonado-Cisneros, law graduate, natural and resident of the town, in his will when he died on December 10, 1886, ordered that the Hermitage of the Santísima Trinidad y San Antón be rebuilt at his expense, where the mortal remains of the testate, of his deceased parents (D. Santiago Maldonado Treviño and Dª María Antonia Maldonado Cisneros), of his wife (Dª Pilar Forcallo y Morales) and other successors in the board of trustees, ordered the construction of a building immediately next to the Hermitage of San Antón (Santísima Trinidad), which will have the shape and proportions of the plan, whose building would be used as a Hospital for the poor, and the family designated by their heirs must reside in it, in order to attend to its conservation and cleaning and whose family should be natural and neighbor of the Villa.

San Sebastian Hermitage (Calzada Cva)

Highlight • Religious Site

It is unknown who and when it was founded, having news of its existence in 1579.
A very popular and highly devoted saint for being the lawyer against the black plague, there were a large number of hermitages in his name in Campo de Calatrava. It can be assured that together with the hermitage of El Salvador it is the oldest in the town, since at the end of the 15th century there was a brotherhood in his name, with a hermitage at the beginning of the 16th century.
Improvements and repairs were made to it over the centuries, a fact proven by the alms given by the citizens of the town in their wills in the books of the deceased. The hermitage is a nave 21 meters long by 5.40 meters wide, tiled floor and mortar and stone walls, with a sacristy measuring 5 by 3.21 meters.
It is located in the square of the same name, San Sebastián. Its cobbled square was also confiscated in 1806. Inside, three very old images are kept, which were saved from the destruction of July 1936, the owner of San Sebastián, Santa Bárbara (who resided for centuries in the hermitage of Ntra Mrs. de los Remedios) and San Antón (previously in the hermitage of the Holy Trinity).

Built on the site called "Cruz del Humilladero", at the expense of the neighbor and native of Calzada, D. León de León y García, surgeon and provincial deputy. Celebrating a solemn mass officiated by the town's music band.

Calzada de Calatrava

Highlight • Settlement

Walking through its streets we will discover the town where Pedro Almodóvar spent his childhood. Just behind the park that bears his name is the old factory of the well-known Glue Imedio which, curiously, is also related to the cinema. In the 1930s, Gregorio Imedio ran the Cine Imedio, as celluloid usually broke due to use, Gregorio repaired the rolls at his parents' drugstore and that's how he discovered Imedio glue.
The current theater is located in what was the old summer cinema, where from the wall of his aunt's house, Almodóvar watched the first films of his childhood.
From a geological point of view, Calzada de Calatrava has numerous volcanic outcrops.

The hermitage of El Salvador del Mundo is from the 16th century, although it underwent a reconstruction from the year 1760 conserving the same Latin cross plan. Its interior consists of a single nave and transept open by a dome.

The very venerable image of the Savior of the World, patron saint of the town, is preserved inside.

Located outside the walls on the road to Granátula and Almagro, it was possibly built during the first decades of the 16th century, since the general visitors on their visit to the town in 1549 ordered that a door with a lock be built at the entrance of the the hermitage within four months, as well as a walled chapel. Burned down around the year 1657, it remained with the same structure, making minimal repairs to the roof and whitewashing with lime.
