Historic Windmills at Ambelos Pass

With these windmills, grain was ground until the middle of the 20th century, because there is plenty of wind here. Worthwhile is also the view from up here, both in the direction of the sea and over the Lasithi Plain over to the Dikti massif.

Lasithi Plateau Windmills

The Lasithi Plateau is the largest plateau of Crete. This plateau is a polje, an extensive plain in the midst of a strongly karstic range of Mesozoic limestones. Due to the topography and the relatively fertile soils, intensive agriculture has been practiced here for centuries. In the spring during the snowmelt here is the water, but later in the year there would be acute water shortage, because the water flows quickly due to the many clefts and caves in the underlying limestone. For this reason, for generations, the water has been pumped up from the depths to irrigate the fields. Previously, this was done by hundreds of wind pumps, which were replaced in the meantime unfortunately by diesel pumps. Many of the wind pumps are in danger of decay, but some good preserved specimens are still in the wind, even if they are no longer driven by pump mechanics.

Its a chilli track at that point but it goes up, and you have a very nice views of the whole plateau with and the Dikti mountains behind. We were lucky to be there when the sun was going down and going through some clouds, creating the sun lines you see in the pictures!
