Lychen: Old Town and Historic City Gates

Highlight • Historical Site

Margrave Johann I founded the city in 1248. It was given a six-meter high city wall and three gate towers, only a few of which have survived in Fürstenberger and Stargarder Tor. In 1302 the city fell to Mecklenburg. 150 years later, Margrave Johann von Brandenburg recaptured the city. The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and two large fires (1648, 1732) destroyed almost the entire city several times. During the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) Lychen came under Swedish occupation. Parts of today's urban area were owned by the Himmelpfort monastery in the Middle Ages.

Carwitz Village

The village became known through the writer Hans Fallada (actually Rudolf Ditzen), who could not decide to leave Nazi Germany and lived from 1933 to 1944 in a Büdnerhaus built around 1875 with his wife Anna Ditzen. His last resting place is after his relocation in the Fallada Park (former cemetery) in Carwitz. Today the Hans Fallada Museum with the Fallada Archives is housed in the buildings. In summer, the place, which is surrounded by the 3 lakes Schmaler Luzin, Dreetzsee and Carwitzer See, is a popular destination for tourists. From here there are many beautiful hiking and cycling trails to discover. The clear and clean lakes invite you to swim and linger on and by the water.

October 1, 2025,20251001 eBike: Lychen - Feldberg - Küstrinchen

After breakfast, we headed to Feldberg in cloudy weather, enjoyed solyanka at the Hullerbusch sheep farm, and visited Hans Fallada's grave, passing through the villages and visiting the fisherman in Küstrinchen. Unfortunately, he was closed... Bockwurst at Wurlsee for everyone!
