Julius von Plänckner was born on February 9, 1791 in Penig, east of Altenburg, as the son of a pastor. The son's express wish led the father to let the 13-year-old join the "Erbprinz" Saxony-Gotha infantry regiment, which was then stationed in Altenburg, as a cadet in July 1804, in which he was promoted to ensign on November 10, 1804 and in the spring of 1805 promoted to second lieutenant.
