Plänckner's view,
The highest (970 m) and at the same time one of the most beautiful viewpoints directly on the Rennsteig, above the town of Suhl, where the Rennsteig reaches its highest point (973 m), bears the name of the “inventor” of the Rennsteig hike. The path runs here on the south side of the Großer Beerberg just below the summit, the highest in the Thuringian Forest (982 m), which itself does not offer any significant views, but is at least of great value as a protected moor biotope.

The adventurous life of Julius von Plänckner:
We can see what a restless and dangerous life the “first Rennsteig hiker” led from the obituary of an unnamed friend (presumably Major Fils) in the “Gothaische Zeitung” of March 16, 1858.
Julius von Plänckner was born on February 9, 1791 in Penig, east of Altenburg, as the son of a pastor. The son's express wish led the father to let the 13-year-old join the "Erbprinz" Saxony-Gotha infantry regiment, which was then stationed in Altenburg, as a cadet in July 1804, in which he was promoted to ensign on November 10, 1804 and in the spring of 1805 promoted to second lieutenant.

Napoleonshöhe Rodacherbrunn

Highlight • Viewpoint

In the year 1806, Napoleon and his troops moved through the village and were said to have spent the night in the former inn, the Rennsteig Casino. He planted a linden tree that still stands today. On his retreat through the town he set fire to numerous houses, including the only inn, which was rebuilt in 1845 (Wikipedia).

Langenbach Cemetery Chapel and Bell Tower

Highlight • Religious Site

The cemetery chapel also marks the start of the panoramic cycle path from Langenbach to Bad Steben. There is a separate bell tower in the cemetery. The chapel stands out due to its completely dark facade made of slate panels.

Alte Zolltafel Stone Bench

Highlight • Monument

The stone bench is reminiscent of the old customs board in this centuries-old border region. The wide field path directly in front of it (panorama cycle path) was once part of the long-distance connection between Nuremberg and Leipzig. The wonderful panorama towards Thuringia can be enjoyed from the wooden bench.
