Picnic area on the Luhe River

Highlight • Rest Area

Large remaining space with many picnic benches right on the Luhe. In addition, a large meadow invites you to play and a charcoal burner hut (must be registered in advance) for a barbecue.
There is a spacious parking lot right next to the rest area - the ideal start or end point for tours by bike or canoe.

The wooden fire hose tower from 1902, which is a listed building, houses the "Sprüttenhus" and is probably the smallest museum in Germany.

On October 29, 1901, the local committee decided on the construction and its execution based on a drawing, and on July 22, 1902, the finished tower was inspected and accepted by the committee members. It was located right next to the oak tree from 1871, which marked the founding of the German Empire.

In addition to its actual function, the tower also served as a local detention cell for vagrants. However, if the detainees' desire for freedom got the better of them, it was easy for them to dig their way to freedom. As one of the last wooden examples in this region, the Salzhausen hose tower is a listed building. It was completely restored in 1986 and a small exhibition on the history of the fire service was put on in 1988.

St. Johannis Church Salzhausen

Highlight • Religious Site

The Romanesque St. John's Church in Salzhausen has the typical appearance of a heath church with its high boulder walls and the attached natural stone tower from the 12th century. The bronze baptismal font from 1403, angel figures from the 17th century and the remains of old wall paintings are worth seeing. The half-timbered gables, which are made of bricks, also date from the 17th century. In the summer months from Easter to Thanksgiving, the church is open for visits (daily from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.).
