California Beach

Highlight • Beach

In which seaside resort is it possible to get from Brazil to California on foot in just five minutes?

Schönberg includes not only the central location but also the districts Neuschönberg and Holm as well as the beach sections Schönberger Strand, California and Brazil.

How it came to these original names of the two latter beach sections, is "passed" as follows ...

Once a fisherman found himself in the beach sand of the Baltic Sea, near his hut, a rotten shipwreck on which "California" stood. He took the weird piece of wood home and neatly nailed it to his front door.
It was not long before a rival fisherman living nearby, but a little further east on the beach, spotted this "swanky" sign on his neighbor's door. "What you can do, I have been able to do for a long time ...", this fisherman may have thought. He immediately reached into his firewood box and picked out a suitable log, on which he carefully painted the word "Brazil".

From then on, this sign had provided its front door and was envious of the less creative contemporaries. And so it was with this exotic name. Finally, the names of the sections of Schönberg developed from it. At present, the beach section California has 426 inhabitants. Brazil only 19 inhabitants.

The wind often blows strongly along the coast, and the man on the Schönberg pier feels it too. The sculpture was created in 2004 for an art exhibition in Schönberg. The shapes were cut and welded from Corten steel sheets. The umbrella is forged. The sculpture is approximately 3.5 meters high. The original is on loan to the Schönberg pier. A smaller version stands in Heiligenhafen.

Schönberger Strand Pier

Highlight • Bridge

After the "old" pier was destroyed by their own soldiers in the war years of 1914, Schöneberg was given a new pier on June 30, 2001. This time not to prevent the enemy from landing but to make the vacation on the beach even more pleasant. Technical details: length: 260 meters, width: 3 meters, widening in the middle of the bridge: 6 meters, bridgehead: 10 meters long and 12.50 meters wide.
