Stackendorf Village

Highlight • Settlement

Nice little village at the foot of the climb to the heights of Franconian Switzerland. The passage offers a panorama of some half-timbered houses. The brook, which is exposed in the middle, separates the lanes, so that you can easily cycle through here.

Levi Strauss Museum (Birthplace)

Highlight • Historical Site

Since the year 2000, in Buttenheim in the birthplace of Levi Strauss, the "father" of blue jeans, there is a museum dedicated to the history of this man and the garment he invented. The landmarked building at Marktstraße 33 is also one of the oldest buildings in Buttenheim.

Löb Strauss, the birth name of the young Levi, was born on 26th of February 1829 as the youngest son of Hirsch Strauss and his wife Rebecca in Buttenheim. Like many Franconian country Jews, his father ran a hawker's trade with cloth and haberdashery, which brought to life the bare essentials for the family of nine. In 1846, Hirsch Strauss died of prolonged illness due to tuberculosis. His death brought the family into financial trouble. Therefore, the mother Rebecca decided in 1848 to emigrate with the three youngest children to America.

The family lived there first in New York. In 1853, the young Levi decided to seek his fortune on the North American west coast. He founded a wholesaler of fabrics and haberdashery in San Francisco and sold everything the gold miners, miners and pioneers of the West needed: from toothbrushes to suspenders and buttons to outfits. Together with a partner, the tailor Jacob Davis from Reno, who had invented a method for the reinforcement of trouser seams by rivets, Levi Strauss finally filed in 1873 a patent for riveted work pants. That was the birth of the jeans.

A small chapel was built above the village in 1727 on the southern outskirts. This was demolished in 1923. A new one was built in the center of the village in 1924 and consecrated in honor of St. Anne on September 28, 1924.
