St. Jakobi Church Hamwarde

Highlight • Religious Site

St. James' Church in Hamwarde was built in 1847/1848 to replace a dilapidated predecessor.

The rectangular brick building rises from a fieldstone base and is topped with a hipped roof. On the west side rises the square tower, covered with a copper roof, which also houses the church's main entrance.

The nave's character is defined by the stained-glass window in the chancel, designed in 1967 by the artist Dehmel.

It depicts the church's patron saint, St. James.

Until then, the chancel window was obscured by an altar wall with a painting of the Ascension of Christ, which is now located on the gallery opposite the pulpit.

During the renovation in 1987, the altar was finally redesigned to its current form. The last major church renovation took place in 2007.

Hamwarde Village Center

Highlight • Settlement

The first documentary mention as Honwarde was in 1230
in the Ratzeburg tithe register. The name is of Saxon origin.
Hamwarde's coat of arms is divided diagonally from top left to bottom right by gold and green.
Above, a red windmill growing at the division, below a golden
horse's head turned to the right." The mill and the horse's head stand for
the agricultural character of Hamwarde.
Until 1950, a mill stood on a hill in the municipality.

Hamwarde Village Pond

Highlight • Lake

The village pond in Hamwarde is an idyllic spot for a rest right by the path, with a small, somewhat hidden bench. There's even a shelter for rainy days, although it's actually meant for the utility boxes! In any case, there's plenty of room to take cover.

Fasanenweg Kollow

Highlight • Trail

Narrow, but relatively easy to drive on trail, in parts also two or three lanes, which is signposted as a dead end coming from Kollow, but you can easily continue by bike. Then a wide, smooth concrete path continues in the direction of Gülzow or the Fasanenhaus.
