After the completion of basalt mining in Oberkassel, some of the quarries filled with water. The Dornheckensee is the largest and deepest of them. It goes down to a depth of 20 meters under the water surface. Rock falls and undercurrents make swimming a life-threatening undertaking. A forester was once an eyewitness when an edge broke off and disappeared into the lake together with the oak tree growing on it.
