Source of the Alte Schwentine

Highlight • River

Source area of the Alte Schwentine
The name Schwentine, "holy river", goes back to Slavic settlers from the year 600, who found old burial sites here. The Alte Schwentine rises in the meadows at the foot of the Grimmelsberg and in the mill pond of Bornhöved. It is the actual Schwentine and was only degraded to a tributary of the Bungsberg-Schwentine due to the cartographer Caspar Danckwerth's confusion in 1652. On the road from Bornhöved to Tarbek, about 200 m behind the exit of Bornhöved on the left-hand side, there is a signpost with the inscription "Schwentinequelle". The source area is in the meadows there, from where the small stream flows westwards. Just before the Alte Plöner Chaussee, the Alte Schwentine takes in the water from the Große Au and directly behind it the spring stream from the mill pond and flows on to Bornhöveder See.

This sturdy green metal bench is located right here on the side of the road for a short rest with great views of the beautiful nature and the Schwentine spring area.

At Volker Christophersen's fish farm/owner Sönke Nagel you can buy fresh fish in their own farm shop. The farm also breeds trout and char.

Bornhöveder See

Highlight • Lake

The Bornhöveder See is located on the western border of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, north of Bornhöved. It is 71 hectares in size and up to 14.3 meters deep. It is part of the Bornhöveder lake chain, which consists of a total of 6 lakes and is also part of the Wankendorfer lake district. The Bornhöveder See is connected to the adjacent Schmalensee by a branch canal about 100m long. The old Schwentine flows through the lake and ultimately flows into the Kiel Fjord. There is a bathing area and a playground on the south bank of the lake.

Vierer Berg (a very special place)

Highlight • Historical Site

The name Bornhöved means "head of the spring". This is expressed in the coat of arms by the water-spouting bowl and the head floating above it.
The name "head of the spring" comes from the fact that the Eider, Stör and Schwentine rivers spring from the ridge of Bornhöved. The Holstein nettle leaf not only indicates that the place belongs to Holstein, but also refers to several events that are important for the history of Holstein:
After the battle on the "Schwentinefeld" in 798, in which Charlemagne defeated the Saxons in alliance with the Abodrites, the area was settled by Slavs.
On July 22, 1227, Count Adolf IV and other North German princes and cities defeated the Danish King Waldemar II here. This meant the end of Danish rule over large areas of the Baltic region.
In the Middle Ages, the Holstein nobility held their meetings on the "Viert" near Bornhöved. During this time, the place may have had town rights for several decades. Finally, in 1813, a battle took place here between Danish-Schleswig-Holstein and Swedish-Russian-Prussian troops.
