Historic Harbour Crane, Büsum

Highlight • Monument

On the land side there is still an old hand-operated crane that was used for loading and rigging the ships. The harbor crane dates back to the time when the Büsum fishing fleet was being built up. The Carl Boysen engine workshop from Büsum, founded in 1917, used the crane to repair and maintain the engines of the fishing boats.

Büsum Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The red and white Büsum lighthouse was built around 1912 and still serves to guide approaching ships. The tower itself is almost 22 meters high, and its light has a range of 12 to 17 nautical miles. The tower is constructed of massive cast-iron plates and was originally built as a black tower; it only received its red and white paint in the 1950s.

Since the 1970s, the lighthouse has no longer been the tallest building in the town. It is dwarfed by a high-rise building that is visible from several kilometers away. Because the 22-story building towers over the lighthouse, its presence remains controversial. However, since it does not have a light, the Büsum lighthouse continues to be an important maritime and landmark navigational aid.

Büsum Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The lighthouse is located near the small fishery, museum and seaport harbor near the center of the municipality Büsum in the district Dithmarschen.

The predecessor building was a wooden structure built in 1875 with a lantern, which had to be pulled up. The current tower was built in the years 1912/1913 as a guide and orientation fire and has a height of 21.4 meters. The fire height is 22 meters above the mean tidal high water and the range is up to 19 nautical miles.
