Nach der Unterwerfung des Slawenfürsten Pribislaw unter Heinrich den Löwen ließ dieser sich 1164 taufen und zum Bau von Klöstern verpflichten. Der Schweriner Bischof Berno veranlasste die erste Klostergründung in Mecklenburg durch einen Konvent von Zisterziensermönchen aus dem Kloster Amelungsborn im Weserbergland. Am 1. März 1171 wurde das Kloster Alt Doberan von zwölf Mönchen und dem Abt Conrad bezogen. Die Mönche wurden bei der Gründung von 25 Laienbrüdern unterstützt. Die damals errichtete Kapelle wurde bereits als Grablege des mecklenburgischen Fürstenhauses genutzt. 1172 wurde Woizlawa, die Gemahlin Pribislaws, dort bestattet. Nach dem Tod Pribislaws während eines Turniers in Lüneburg am 30. Dezember 1178 kam es in dem gerade christianisierten Land zu einem Slawenaufstand, in dessen Zuge das Kloster am 10. November 1179 verwüstet wurde. Die Neuansiedlung des Klosters erfolgte 1186 in Doberan. Der "curia antiqua" - Althof - bezieht sich auf den um 1200 nach der Neugründung des Klosters Doberan hier eingerichteten Wirtschaftshof des Klosters.

Die alte Kapelle wurde nach SCHLIE vermutlich um 1300 zerstört. Die heute noch erhaltene Kapelle wurde im Kern wahrscheinlich im 15. Jahrhundert über dem Grab der Fürstin Woizlawa errichtet, verfiel aber schon bald. 1522 wurde die verfallene Kapelle an dem "wilden Ort im Felde" vom mecklenburgischen Herzog Heinrich V. aufgesucht.

Mit der Reformation und der Auflösung des Klosters nach 1552 kam es zum weiteren Verfall der Gebäude und zu einer unterschiedlichen wirtschaftlichen Nutzung. 1602 wurde von einem hier befindlichen Backhaus berichtet.

Nach einem Blitzschlag am 9. August 1822 veranlasste Herzog Friedrich Franz I. den Wiederaufbau der Kapelle durch Baurat Krüger.

1852 werden die Gebeine der Fürstin Woizlawa wieder vor dem Altar in der erneuerten Gruft beigesetzt, die Grabplatte wurde erneuert, das heutige Gitter darüber stammt aus der Zeit nach 1888.

1888 kann die Kapelle wieder der kirchlichen Nutzung übergeben werden, nachdem eine umfangreiche Restaurierung und neugotische Veränderung durch den Hofbaurat Möckel vorgenommen wurde.
