Sperkenbrunnen Oelsnitz

Highlight • Monument

When the market was redesigned in 2008/09, the central square in Oelsnitz received the attractive fountain. The water feature was designed by the Rößnitz sculptor Peter Luban. A legendary tradition, which also alludes to the nickname of the Oelsnitz, was the inspiration for the fountain. The inhabitants of the city are called "the Sperken". So it is in a legend that, according to current knowledge, goes back to the Oelsnitz author and dialect writer Karl Völkel (1869 to 1934). As he wrote in the "Leipziger Tageblatt" in 1907, a magician once transformed the Oelsnitz people into Sperken (sparrows, sparrows), just as they were about to hand over the sinister man to the pyre on the Galgenberg. The individual episodes of the legend have been implemented in the sculptures of the fountain and result in a lively splashing water feature. The fountain has become a popular meeting place for the residents of Oelsnitz and guests.

Zoephelsches Haus

Highlight • Historical Site

The building, an old tanner's farm with a half-timbered upper floor, was built in 1755 and survived all major fires thanks to its location in front of the city walls.
In 1863 the dealer and master plumber Anton Zöphel (1830 to 1880) bought the house and property. The family ran a grocery store, later a gas station with repair and battery service until the late 1950s.
From 1966 to 1991 the house belonged to the building management and was used for shop window advertising and for residential purposes. The framework was uncovered in 1985. A comprehensive renovation took place in 1995/96. In September 1996 the city library moved in, three months later today's cultural and tourist information.

The Zoephelsche Haus is used for library events and small exhibitions. Since November 2009, a plaque in the courtyard has commemorated the Oelsnitz teacher, hiker and publicist Paul Apitzsch (1873 to 1949).

On the church square in Oelsnitz there was a memorial for those who died in the war of unification in 1870/71. Only the iron fence has survived from this memorial. The fate of the monument is unknown. Now a plain stone pillar with a general dedication has been erected in its place.

On display in the church square is one of the four bells that was removed in 2021 during the renovation of the bell tower of St. Jakobi Church. It has been restored and refurbished, and the inscription is now clearly legible again.
