Nordendorf Station – History and Transformation

Nordendorf Station is one of the oldest stations on the Augsburg–Donauwörth railway line and was a key factor in the town's development for many decades. The station building is considered one of the oldest still standing along this section of the line and for a long time marked the "gateway" to the town.

After standing empty and increasingly dilapidated for years, the municipality of Nordendorf acquired the station site in 2020 to be able to shape its future use. Since then, concepts for the redesign and revitalization of this historic site have been under discussion – including within the framework of a student ideas competition.

Thus, the station now symbolizes the transformation of many small railway stations: from a once central transportation hub to a place where history, local development, and future planning converge.

During the construction of the railway line in 1843, bones were found near Nordendorf. A subsequent excavation revealed an early medieval row of graves, the likes of which had rarely been discovered up to that time. It was a sensation throughout Europe, reports the Nordendorf Cultural Circle, especially in the specialist world, and archaeologists came from all over. Several thousand grave goods were found during these excavations.

King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who was very interested in history, decreed at the time that a monument should be erected at all of these important excavation sites, including in Nordendorf. "In 1853, the Historical Society of Swabia erected this monument made of Lechbruck sandstone about 80 meters south of the grave field, right next to the railway line, initially with a small complex, a square hedge around the outside with four linden trees at the corners.

Fugger Castle Nordendorf

Highlight • Castle

The Fuggerschloss Nordendorf is the remnant of a formerly much larger castle complex of the Fugger. The two-story gable roof building is located in the middle of the village.
For the Nordendorfer it is the center of the place, so to speak.
The alliance coat of arms of the Rehlinger-Welser can still be seen above the entrance gate.
What is still preserved today and is known as the "Nordendorfer Castle" is actually the pre-castle. The yellow L-shaped building, which measures approximately ten by 20 meters, extends along the main street in the village.
