St. Jakobi Church Hamwarde

Highlight • Religious Site

St. James' Church in Hamwarde was built in 1847/1848 to replace a dilapidated predecessor.

The rectangular brick building rises from a fieldstone base and is topped with a hipped roof. On the west side rises the square tower, covered with a copper roof, which also houses the church's main entrance.

The nave's character is defined by the stained-glass window in the chancel, designed in 1967 by the artist Dehmel.

It depicts the church's patron saint, St. James.

Until then, the chancel window was obscured by an altar wall with a painting of the Ascension of Christ, which is now located on the gallery opposite the pulpit.

During the renovation in 1987, the altar was finally redesigned to its current form. The last major church renovation took place in 2007.

St. Nikolai Church, Hohenhorn

Highlight • Religious Site

The Hohenhorn church, surrounded by the cemetery, was built by Georg Wilhelm Timmermann in 1825-27. In 1867, Carl August Wilhelm Lohmeyer added the western tower.
The simple late classical brick building has arched windows and an eaves cornice. The straight east end of the fairly wide hall building accommodates three window axes. A gable roof that is hipped to the east covers the building. The slender neo-Gothic west tower made of brick is distinguished by corner ashlars on the lower floor; Biforia, dials and stepped triangular gables structure the upper zone. A copper-covered pointed helmet crowns the tower.
One of the special characteristics of the church is the uniform initial furnishing that still exists, including a workshop copy of a Rubens painting with the Lamentation of Christ. With funds made available by the German Foundation for Monument Protection in 2016, the new roof covering in slate was funded.

Hohenhorn is one of the "most beautiful villages", as not only the people of Hohenhorn think - and this designation is even "official".
In the 1960s and 1970s, Hohenhorn took part in the competition for the most beautiful village several times - with increasing success. In 1971 it was first recognized. In 1973 the village took third place and in 1975 second place in the state competition. In 1975 Hohenhorn was also named the most beautiful village in the district and received the silver medal in the national competition. In 1979 the community even won the state competition in Schleswig-Holstein. The state government commemorates this award with a sculpture by the well-known sculptor Karlheinz Goetdke on the Brink: A rooster announces the good news to the beautiful village of HOHENHORN.
