Ruins of the Gangolfskapelle (Milseburg)

Highlight • Historical Site

Basalt Prism Wall at Gangolfsberg

Highlight • Natural Monument

Absolute natural highlight in the middle of the biosphere reserve core zone and the Gangolfsberg nature reserve. To protect nature, mountain biking in the core zone and the nature reserve is only permitted on marked MTB/cycle paths. Unfortunately, mountain biking is not allowed on the paths to the basalt prism wall and the neighboring Teufelskeller.
Please stick to it out of consideration for hikers and nature! - Rhön biosphere reserve

Great route, especially from the basalt prism wall, it goes over hill and dale. At the beginning there is a lot of information about the different types.

September 6, 2025,Heidelstein - Basaltsee - Gangolfsberg - Thüringer Hütte
A fantastic tour through the Lange Rhön, with a variety of meadows and forests offering beautiful views. If you like, you can take a short break at the Thüringer Hütte (Thuringian Hut) for coffee and homemade cake. The cream puffs are a real hit 😋.

Surprise visit in the Rhön, how nice! 🤗 I'm so happy that 🦢 is coming to the birthday hike 👍🏼 We start at the beautifully situated 🅿️ Schornhecke. Today we focus on the Extratour Hochrhöntour through the largest non-alpine nature reserve in Bavaria, the long Rhön. We are absolutely overwhelmed by the meadows, the colors, smells and everything that creeps …

Today is my darling's birthday, for this reason we went to the Rhön for a short vacation. Our first tour today was beautiful. Varied and with a nice break in the Thüringer Hütte. It was warm here too, but mostly there was a bit of wind and sometimes we were in the forest..

Today for Silke's birthday there was only the best of everything: A real premium hiking trail that absolutely deserves its name, "Extratour Hochrhöner" also well seasoned with the natural experience Gangolfberg.
With a wonderful 22 degrees and a refreshing wind, we start at the Schornhecke car park. We walk on small paths through blooming meadows full of flowers. And we …

On our second day in the Rhön, many beautiful views are on the agenda. While researching tours in preparation, the "Extratour Hochrhöntour" (tinyurl.com/4hpykh3p) seemed to be one of the most beautiful. I extended it with a section of the "Buchoniarundweg," especially to see the basalt prism wall, which I already thought was phenomenal in photos.

One of the most beautiful and varied tours I've done in the Rhön so far. Komoot exaggerated the elevation gain. It was about 500 meters.

On the way to the meeting point, over the Schornhecke, I was initially shocked because all the trees were being cleared right on the beautiful path up to the Steinkopf 😳 But I couldn't stop to take a closer look because I wanted to be on time...
