View of Klostersee

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Klostersee near Lehnin has a triangular shape and stretches between Lehnin and Nahmitz. It covers an area of 38 ha and is 29 m above sea level on average. NN and has a depth of four to six meters in the middle area. Geologically, it is probably the remains of a dead ice block, since the surrounding sander plateau Zauche, which was deposited in the Vistula Ice Age, is rather barren and dry and glacial valleys did not flow here. The Emster, which comes from the mill pond above, flows through it. The Emster, a Havel tributary, connects the Klostersee with the Netzener See in its further course to the north.

The western shore is partially forested, the northern and eastern shores are almost entirely forested. The south-east bank is developed, on the west bank there is a natural campsite. In addition to signposted hiking trails, the bathing beach on the east bank, which is built on a slope, is worth mentioning. Around 100 meters south of the lido is the Lehnin sculpture park with sometimes changing depictions.

The body of water was named after the Cistercian monastery in Lehnin, founded in 1180 by the second Margrave of Brandenburg, Otto I, which is just a few minutes' walk from the southern end of the lake.

The clear, transparent architecture made of wood and glass with the large terrace located directly on the banks of the Klostersee gives the café a very special touch. The guests are offered uniquely beautiful views of the banks of the Klostersee. There are homemade cakes, ice cream or spicy snacks to go with Italian coffee variations. There are usually up to 35 seats available in the pavilion.

For special occasions, a maximum of 40 people can be set. In the summer season, the spacious terrace also offers larger groups a special setting to celebrate.

The café is located in a sculpture park with a gallery, entry is free. With the motorized barge “Kanaletto”, up to 22 people can cross the lake to the monastery side or book a lake tour (from 10 people). Free WiFi in the café and on the terrace. A unique place for many occasions.

Emster Canal Riverside Path

Highlight • Trail

The 21 kilometer long Emster River, which is developed like a canal over long stretches near Lehnin, flows from the town through the Klostersee towards the Havel. The Emster Canal, on the other hand, begins blindly a little further west in Lehnin in a bowl-like widening where the barges used to turn. The canal flows into the southwestern area of the monastery lake after about 1.6 kilometers. There is a beautiful hiking trail with many piers on its banks.
