Hohenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

Today's Hohenstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1306 as "Castum Hohenstein in dem Grabfelde", i.e. as a castle. Countess Jutta von Henneberg was listed as the owner. In the following 150 years, the hilltop castle changed hands several times until Duke Wilhelm of Saxony, who gave the castle "zu dem Hohen Steyn" as a fief to the brothers Hans and Thomas von Lichtenstein. In 1466, the Bamberg vassals Kunz von Aufseß and Kunz von Streitberg, whose ancestral castles were in Franconian Switzerland, devastated the castle. Both knights and their brother Kunz Ochs, who was also involved, were soon sentenced by the Coburg council court to compensate for the damage caused and to pay 4,000 guilders to the Coburg rulers for breach of the peace.

Devil's Stone

Highlight • Natural Monument

Two staircases carved into the stone lead up to the Devil's Stone in the north of Hohenstein Castle's rock garden. They are still well preserved, as are the abutments of the wooden bridge that once connected the stairs. A wooden hut once stood here. The wooden structures have long since disappeared, but the stone remains of that era have survived to this day.

Spaltstein Rock Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

A narrow gap exists between the two sandstone blocks, which have come to lie close together here. This is not a single stone that has been split (as the name suggests), but rather a formation of two stones lying side by side.

Bismarckstein

Highlight • Monument

"To the Chancellor of the newly resurrected German Empire" was the inscription on the now sadly destroyed bronze relief from 1899 on the Bismarck Stone. The stone laurel wreath that framed the relief is still preserved. As is the now barely legible inscription carved into the stone below: "Prince Bismarck - First Chancellor."

Eleonore's Rock

Highlight • Monument

The plaque commemorating Eleonore von Imhof dates from July 29, 1910 - and gave its name to the Eleonore Stone of the Querkelfelsen.

In 1898, the initials "GI" were carved into the Imhof Stone above the bench carved into the rock. They commemorate Gustav von Imhof, who last extensively renovated and expanded Hohenstein Castle in 1890. The new construction of the southeast wing and the tower with its external staircase in the castle garden date from this period.

Querkelstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

It was not the Querkel, the legendary dwarves who are said to have lived in this forest, but the people who carved the twelve steps into the stone block to make the climb easier.

Luisenstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

This stone is named after Baroness Luise von Imhof, née von Molke. The "L" crossing the carved date 1850 stands for Luise. It is the oldest date in this rock garden.
