Geophyte and Herb Trail Information Boards, Ichterloh

Highlight • Trail

Here you will find the “geophyte and herb path”. The numerous plant species such as herb, Solomon's seal, aroid or witch's herb as well as various orchids are presented. The oak-hornbeam and woodruff-beech forests of the Ichterloh are considered to be particularly rich in species. The occurrence of a total of five different woodpecker species is also remarkable. Because in addition to the well-known great spotted and green woodpecker, the demanding and rare species black, middle and small woodpecker also breed here. A visit in spring, at the end of April/beginning of May, is particularly worthwhile, when the wild garlic stands that cover the entire forest floor are in bloom.

Especially in the spring when the wild garlic flowers under the beech, this forest looks like a fairytale

"Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to erect "their" cross at this spot. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and aims to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our lives, just as it was part of the life of Jesus.
So I hope that many people ... will visit the wayside crosses, whether as places of silence and breathing before God, whether as places of community gathering, prayer and praise of God."

A lovely, varied tour.

Although, at this time of year, the scent of wild garlic makes you very hungry 😋

On the way there, I listen to WDR 4 news: January in North Rhine-Westphalia was too warm. Nowhere in our country was it as warm as here 🥵

Well, I think, it's all relative. I haven't been sweating much lately, but yes, we avid Komoot users know:

"Snow and ice everywhere,
only in Lünen is it hot."
