Sopot Balneological Center

Highlight • Historical Site

The Balneological Center in Sopot, Poland, is part of the Pomeranian Rheumatology Center Dr. Jadwigi Titz-Kosko. The building was designed in 1903 by the architects Paul Puchmüller and Heinrich Dunkel and completed in 1904. It was built on the site of a former bathing establishment. The center was listed as a monument in 1982.

The building is decorated with sculptures and stained glass windows. Above the main portal there is a mermaid, a triton and the coat of arms of the city of Sopot. The chimney at the north-east corner of the building features a glass viewing gallery that also serves as a lighthouse. Various treatments are offered in the balneology department, including brine baths, cryotherapy, exercise therapy, balneotherapy, hydrotherapy, inhalation and rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system.

Opposite the center is a fountain fed with water from the St. Wojciech spring. There were plans to reconstruct the tower's lantern, which was removed in the 1960s. The tower is made of ceramic bricks and lime mortar and was once about 32.5 meters above sea level.

The Balneological Center in Sopot is a historical and architectural jewel.

In a beautiful but quite snobbish and very expensive seaside resort like Sopot, there seems to be no place for a fishing harbor. This, however, is not true. There is a fishing harbor where you can see picturesque, colorful wooden boats referring to the centuries-old tradition of this place. Until the 19th century, Sopot was a fishing village.

Therefore, some people are surprised that near the pier, the famous "Monciak" or Plac Przyjaciół Sopotu, on the southern part of the beach, there is a fishing harbor. It is worth adding that this is the last of the Sopot fishing harbors, of which there were several in the past. The one that "remained" on the Sopot seashore has been going on here continuously since the 13th century.

Happy Return Fishermen's Shrine

Highlight • Religious Site

The chapel was built as a symbol of the happy return of fishermen. The face of the chapel is facing the sea waves pumping fishing boats. It contains an unusual sculpture of a seated Jesus, whose eyes are fixed on the sea and awaiting the return of the fishermen. The sculpture was dismantled in the spring of 2019 for reconstruction, and then quickly returned to its place. The palisade-shaped chapel was built of wooden pillars that have been elements of the Sopot pier for over 80 years (they were removed during the reconstruction). The Happy Return chapel was designed by architect Bruno Wandtke, who died at the end of 2010, after which the neighboring public garden was named, was created in memory of the presence of Pope John Paul II in 1999 at the hippodrome in neighboring Karlikov.
