Monument to the Defenders of Białystok

Created in 1973 as a nature monument located at Jana Pawła II Avenue, commemorating the defense of Białystok in September 1939.

The monument was erected on the initiative of Antoni Malecki, a defender of Białystok from 1939, on a small hill in Wysoki Stoczek. The place commemorates the position of the heroic defense of the city under the command of Lt. Col. Zygmunt Szafranowski by soldiers of the 42nd Infantry Regiment, who repelled four German attacks. The monument was realized by using trees growing along the route to Warsaw, the "witnesses" of the wartime events of 1939 in the form of debarked poplar and willow trunks, which were properly positioned and composed, creating a unique scenography of the dramatic events of those years. The monument suffered damage due to natural erosion and systematic vandalism.
